In the season the tree can take it, keeping its natural shape
Our pruning starts from what the tree is and what you want from it, and is done in the season the species can tolerate.
When a tree has to come down, we take it down in sections, with ropes, safely for the roof, the cables, the fence and everything underneath. Georgios Maravas, agricultural technologist with thirty years working on Messinian trees, decides what is cut and what stays.
Tree pruning: four reasons, four methods
Formative pruning
on young trees, so they take on early the framework they will keep for life.
Fruit pruning
on olive, citrus and fruit trees, for light inside the canopy and fruit within arm’s reach.
Rejuvenation pruning
on neglected trees, over two or three years, so they regain their size and shape without shock.
Safety pruning and thinning
on tall trees near houses, roads and cables: removing dead and dangerous branches, reducing the weight of the canopy, opening it up to the wind.
When each is pruned
Dead and dangerous branches can be removed at any time of year.
Tree removal
A tree is removed when it is dead or diseased beyond recovery, when it threatens a roof, wall or cables, when its roots are lifting paving and foundations, or when space has to be cleared for building. Before felling, we check whether the tree can be saved by pruning, and we tell you.
Removal is done in sections, from the top down, with branches and sections of trunk lowered in a controlled way on ropes. That is how we work even in narrow courtyards and right next to buildings. Finally we cut up the trunk and branches, take them away and, if you wish, remove the stump so the space is ready for whatever comes next.
Tall trees
Pines, eucalyptus, cypresses and poplars that have outgrown the house need climbing equipment, ropes and experience. We prune and fell tall trees safely for people, the building and the neighbours, with the debris leaving your property the same day.
Frequently asked questions about pruning and tree removal
When are olive trees pruned?
At the end of winter, after the harvest and before new growth begins. Pruning opens the canopy to the light and keeps the fruit at a height where it can be picked.
My tree is tall and close to the house. Can it be felled?
Yes. We climb the tree and bring it down in sections, with every piece tied to a rope. That way trees can be felled even in courtyards with no access for machinery.
Do I need a permit to fell a tree?
In many cases, especially within a village or town or for certain species, the municipality or the Forestry Service requires a permit. We tell you on the first visit whether one is needed and what they will ask for.
Do you take the branches away?
Yes. We cut up and take away the branches and trunk. If you would like firewood, we cut it to the size that suits you and leave it stacked.
Do you also prune fruit trees on an estate?
Yes. Olive, citrus, pomegranate, fig and deciduous fruit trees, each in its own season and in the way the species needs.
One phone call and we are on our way
You tell us what kind of tree it is, where it is and what concerns you. Ten minutes is enough for us to understand what is needed and arrange a visit.
