Garden construction and maintenance

A garden is judged in its third year, not on handover day.

We build it from the ground up and stay on to look after it

That is when you see whether the soil was properly prepared, whether the plants went in at the right spacing and whether the irrigation was set for the season. That is why garden construction and maintenance are done by the same team: whoever built it knows what it needs to stay the way it was handed over.

Georgios Maravas, agricultural technologist, oversees the project from the earthworks to the maintenance programme, all over Messinia, Sparta and as far as Pyrgos.

Garden construction: what happens and in what order

Order matters. Everything that goes under the soil is done first, so the garden never has to be dug up again for a single pipe.

1

Earthworks and levels

Excavation, backfilling and shaping the gradients so that rainwater drains away from the house, not towards it.

2

Drainage and services

Irrigation pipework, power for lighting and the pump, inspection chambers. All in place before anything is laid on top.

3

Hard landscaping

Paths, edged flower beds, retaining walls, steps, bases for pergolas and seating areas.

4

Soil preparation

Improving the soil with organic matter and sand where needed, so the roots find food and air.

5

Planting

Trees first, then shrubs, then perennials and ground cover, following the planting plan.

6

Lawn

Ready-made turf or seed, where the design calls for it. See lawns.

7

Automatic irrigation

Drippers and sprinklers by zone, controller, and a full working test. See automatic irrigation.

8

Handover

We walk round the garden together and explain what it needs in its first summer.

With our own crews and our own machinery, with no waiting for a subcontractor between stages.

Garden maintenance: a programme at the garden’s own pace

Maintenance is a programme, not a visit when something goes wrong. We build it around the specific garden and the season:

Lawn mowing

at regular intervals, with the cutting height changing between summer and winter.

Pruning

of shrubs, hedges and trees, each in the season it can take it. See pruning.

Irrigation adjustment

season by season, checking drippers and sprinkler heads so that each zone gets just what it needs.

Feeding and plant protection

in measured doses, by an agricultural technologist who spots a problem while it is still small.

Clean-up

of leaves, weeds and garden waste, taken away from your property.

Replacements and infill planting

wherever the garden needs it, with the same species so it stays consistent.

The programme suits homes lived in all year round, holiday homes that need the garden ready when you arrive, apartment buildings and managed properties that want one person in charge and a fixed plan, and hotels with their own season.

When a garden build begins

Autumn and winter are the best months for planting in Messinia: the soil is moist, temperatures are mild and plants have time to root before their first summer. Earthworks and hard landscaping go ahead all year round. If you call us in summer, the design and preparation move forward so that planting happens in the right season.

Frequently asked questions about construction and maintenance

Yes, and it is how we usually work. The garden we built is the garden we know how to keep.

Yes. We start with a visit to look at the plants, the irrigation and the soil, and put together a programme from where the garden stands today.

It depends on what is in the garden. A lawn needs regular mowing in spring and summer, while a Mediterranean garden with drought-tolerant plants needs only a few visits a year. The programme is set garden by garden and season by season.

Yes. At the design stage we set out what has to come first, such as services, earthworks and trees, and what can wait, without digging up what has already been done.

Yes, our own crews and our own machinery for earthworks, cutting and transport. So the schedule depends on us, not on third parties.

One phone call and we are on our way

You tell us where the property is and what you have in mind. Ten minutes is enough for us to understand what is needed and arrange a visit.
